COAST leaders have dismissed Tourism minister Najib Balala’s claim that he is committed to fighting prostitution at the Coast. The leaders had last week accused him of condoning sex tourism, which has lured many girls and boys to prostitution. Balala, in a quick rejoinder accused the leaders of playing bad politics instead of coming together to develop the region.
Yesterday, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims Mombasa chairman Mudhar Khitamy dismissed the minister saying he was not sincere on the fight against prostitution.”The minister is full of pronouncements and rhetoric. Coast leaders will only calm down if this illegal business is stopped. We need action, not mere talk. The minister has powers to stop it but tourists who flock to the coastal region for sexual pleasures in the private villas and hotels are becoming more important than the Kenyan children,” Khitamy said.
He accused the minister of laxity and politicising the issue.”We are not interested in politics, neither have we declared our interest in vying for any political seat. Our main concern is to see that our society is not eroded and our daughters and sons condemned to prostitution. So the minister should stop watering down our concerns by saying that we are engaging in bad politics,” he said. “He should not tell us that he is at a forefront in condemning the illegal business he should tells us instead that we have arrested ten people in connection with child prostitution not just mere talk,” she added.
